Nutmeg “Porno Futbal” EP (Neroli) [NERO11]

Nutmeg Rumor has it that whenever Dego gets excited about the world cup or football in general, he decides to put out another minimal, bass heavy, bad bwoy riddim of the broken sort under his Nutmeg guise. Whatever his motivations might be, the result is sure to please fans of deep & deadly bass lines, chunky, stuttered drums surrounded by sparse jazzy chords and occasionally lyrics from some of the finest female voices out of West London. Not surprisingly, the one like Dennis McFarlane does not disappoint with this latest journey to Planet Nutmeg. The disk opens up with “Change”, a seriously funky boom-clack riddim with some forward-thinking lyrics on top from Vanessa Freeman. Then drops the title track, and this is the standout tune for me. The beat is unique and interesting, sounding fresh and familiar simultaneously. The bumpin boogie bass line will have your head noddin like a bobble head Chihuahua. And it wouldn’t deserve to to be called “Porno Futbal” without plenty of orgasmic samples, sure to get the dancers all hot and sweaty. Lastly, “The Set Piece Punishment” delivers a serious blow to the bass cabinets as well as the goalie. We see these football references all through the Nutmeg releases. I know I will be looking forward to the next world cup which will hopefully inspire Mr. Ranks to bless us with more of this future funk, broken boogie, call-it-what-you-want-cos-its-all-good bidniss.  Jus Wan
