L.I.S. “The Key” / Calibre “Overation” (Exit Records) [EXIT003]
The most convincing argument I’ve heard against digital music piracy is that it doesn’t offer the listener a tangible piece of artwork. Then again, most Jungle labels put little effort into the packaging of singles, due to a lack of inspiration or money or both, so a piece of artwork is often hard to come by. It’s refreshing when someone, in this case D-Bridge, bucks the trend. Exit has collaborated with Alex Eveson at Altmedium to produce the first in the “Aptitude” series, a gorgeous clear-vinyl 10″ limited to 1000 copies. The sleeve, label and included poster feature Everson’s splattered, vector-art girls and butterflies in pretty pinks, browns, grey and white. Thankfully the tunes are matching in quality. Chris Inperspective and Steve Banaczech get their first release as Living In Shadows with “The Key,” a lovely, psychadelic roller with a sinister breakdown. The mighty Calibre tweaks out heartache strings on “Overation,” tuff yet warm and one of his recent best.
